Myth: You will have difficulty learning new skills as you age

A higher level of mental flexibility actually comes with age. It is a misconception to think that older generations can't adjust to the changes.

Myth: Physical and mental deterioration are absolute

Yes, these processes slow down with age, but a healthy lifestyle can slow them down. Regular exercise of the brain by playing with puzzles, word games, and the like can maintain and improve cognitive fitness. It is those negative stereotypes that speed up deterioration. Just drop those ideas cold and rewrite your vision of what is possible, and you will do much better.

Myth: Loneliness is inevitable for older people

Actually older adults usually have closer contact with family and friends. One makes deliberate changes in life, without a work schedule in the way, to have time with people one enjoys. Family may wish to come closer and spend more time with you. Perhaps time for playing with a grandchild is a welcome addition to your life. It is actually the younger folks that see the elderly as lonely. Moments of happy memories can and do fill in the times spent alone so that even these are not lonely hours.

Be careful not to stereotype someone in your life because you attribute behaviors you have heard about the older years. Negative thoughts about aging are continually shown in research to have adverse effects. Positive thoughts have the reverse - beneficial effects. It is time to join in to change the way the world ages. As we move into the years where the baby-boomers begin to turn 65, we have a significant population that can dynamically change the way we perceive aging. Community education on topics of wellness and quality of life can help to transform society's point of view.
